One of the original developers of EverQuest, Mike “Hutch” Hutchins has passed away at the age of 51.
He is listed in the original credits for EverQuest as Assistant Producer and as a World Builder.
Among the zones he built are Neriak, Paineel, Solusek A and B.
John Smedley, former co-worker of Mike posted this on Twitter, with a response from another former EverQuest alum, Tony Garcia.
His sister, Teri, announced his passing on Facebook:
Sad to share that my brother Mike Hutchins passed away yesterday due to heart failure. Mike was a gentle giant and was one of the kindest people I knew. He will be greatly missed. Thank you everyone who prayed for his recovery from heart surgery. In the end God answered Mike’s final prayer to go home to Jesus and be freed from the pain and suffering. 💔💔
His death comes less than 7 months after the death of another member of the original EverQuest team, Brad McQuaid, who died in November of 2019.
Hutchins had been battling complications from heart surgery several weeks prior. A GoFundMe account had been set up for his recovery.
Mike Hutchins died on May 3, 2020. He was 51 years old.
His sister Teri says “Mike is not a fan of photos. This is one of the few I have of him. ❤️”
Mike and Brad face my life many years when dr. Gave me no hope . They gave me EQ and the family that kept me living . Thank you .
You will be missed.
Thanks for creating some of the most nostalgic memories of my childhood down in SolA and Solb.
