January sees the beginning of the Year of Darkpaw, where heralds to the Avatars of the Gods are making an appearance across the lands of Norrath.

The first of two Heralds in January, the Herald of the Fathom Lord is currently making camp in The Mystic Lake. Once the camp is complete, it is believed that the Avatar of Tarew Marr will arrive.

Adventurers level 125+

Players who wish to assist in the creation of the camp will have to make their way to the centre of the lake. The Herald will have a quest for any characters who are level 125 or beyond. The quest will ask players to head into the Splendid Sky Aerie, and to the lands in the Ballads of Zimara expansion.

The Herald has a rotation of 6 different quests which can be completed every three hours.

Description of the quest: Building and maintaining a camp requires a great deal of work and materials. The Herald of Tarew Marr has asked for my assistance in gathering supplies.

Quest reward: 10 Minted Celebration Token and 1 Status Bounty [10,000]

It looks like the camp also has a Celebration Merchant. For Tarew Marr, the merchant is Kwabu.

Kwabu has various items for purchase with Minted Celebration Tokens rewarded from completing the Herald’s quests. These include a plushie of Tarew Marr for 50 tokens, a celebration altar for 50 tokens plus 500,000SP 2,500p 20g 99c and Altar travel Unlock: Tarew Marr for 25 tokens and 1,000,000SP 10,000p 80g 3s 97c.

Adventurers under level 125

Fret not, those who have yet to achieve such accomplishments. There is another quest for those who wish to contribute. This one starts at level 5 and has a range of options for anyone to complete.

The Book of Deeds has a quest available for anyone over level 5 and is located next to Darkpaw Celebrator Katrynn in either Qeynos or Freeport. Pictured is the Qeynos location. (thank you Raine for the update location)

The Book of Deeds is a quest with many options. While it may be unclear, completing any one of these options completes the quest and rewards with 5x Year of Darkpaw Doubloons.

Checking on Camp Completion

When you hail the Herald and select the option, “I would love to take a look at your progress.” A box pops up which shows the amount of time it will take the Herald to research the next stage of the camp. From looking at this research timer, we can speculate that there are 5 stages of the camp, with the Avatar spawning once the fifth stage is completed.

The length of time it will take to build the camp at stage one.

New Shinies

Along with as a brand new public camp supplies quests, the Year of Darkpaw has kicked off with brand new shinies with a new look to them. These can be tracked via the Track Harvestables, although at time of writing these do not have a name and show as a blank space in the tracking list. The shinies are fabled versions of the following collections:

  • Cracked Bone Fragments
  • Glowing Shards
  • Gnoll Bone Fragments
  • Nektulos Pine Needle
  • Rivervale Coins Collection

Handing in a completed collection to any Collection Merchant rewards the player with a number of Year of Darkpaw Doubloons. Which can be used to purchase items from Katrynn, the Year of Darkpaw Merchant.

The Year of Darkpaw Merchant, Katrynn has also set up and is selling her wares all year. From looking at her selection, it seems she will have exclusive released items each month. For now, we can only purchase January’s items. However, we can now view the items that will be available in February.

We’ll keep you updated on the camp’s progression as they occur. Once the camp is set up and complete, players will have the opportunity to purchase an ability which will teleport them directly to the camp. This may be via the Celebration Merchant who, at time of writing, has nothing on offer to purchase.
